The Prosperity Gospel and Mark T. Barclay

The book also makes clear that the prosperity Gospel is a false Gospel.  There are more warnings in the New Testament about the dangers of wealth to our spiritual well-being than there are warnings about sexual sin.

That quote isn’t meant to downplay the seriousness of sexual sin in the bible, but it just shows the gravity of the nature of the Prosperity Gospel and its destructiveness to the well being of the Christian.

It’s also hypocritical on Mark T. Barclay’s part to endorse such behaviors and never once obey the biblical data on the destructiveness of the Prosperity Gospel and its teachers, whom he is one of them!

Let us not forget who Barclay has preaching at his church namely Kenneth Copeland, Charles Capps, Jerry Savelle, Lester Sumrall and who are the fathers of his faith namely Hagin, Osteen, and others and let us also not forget that Barclay himself exemplifies these men with his own lifestyle with a ministry jet and asking for many ministry gifts.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 Amplified Bible

For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction, but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying], they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold,And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions.

What Barclay is preaching is an American myth and fiction and it’s false teaching according to the biblical data! My question to his followers is this, do you follow Holy Scripture or is Mark T. Barclay’s so called prophetic voice stronger?

One of the great tenants of the Protestant Reformation and yes you are part of that if you aren’t a Catholic is what is called Sola Scriptura in Latin and in english it’s Scripture Alone and what it basically means is that Scripture alone stands in all authority above the church and it’s teachers.

You as a believer and a church goer have the right to ask Barclay about his teaching and lifestyle which frankly isn’t sitting well with the bible and its standards in righteousness and holiness!

Ben Witherington further gives voice about Barclay’s lifestyle and says, ”  It argues that Christians are called to live a simple lifestyle that doesn’t involve conspicuous consumption. Christians are not called merely to tithe; Christ calls upon his followers to give sacrificially, which raises the ante, so to speak.”

The bottom line is this, when Mark T. Barclay speaks about holiness and sin he can only speak to it on his own terms.

The bottom line is this, when Mark T. Barclay speaks about holiness and sin he can only speak to it on his own terms. This is why we only hear from him about “right living” and “dirty living” instead of doctrine that reflects biblical data and church history. The main reason for this is that Mark T. Barclay not only endorses the sinfulness of the Prosperity Gospel but preaches and lives it.

The Prosperity Gospel is a false teaching and it is a parasite on the Body of Christ. For example, the Assembly of God churches in Australia like America stood strong against this false teaching before many of their churches were infected with this heresy.

Mark T. Barclay, repent from your mishandling of church history, condemnation of Protestantism, and your sinfulness in the prosperity gospel and your association with those who also preach it.

  2. Chuck Swarthout says:

Having not only known Dr. Barclay for many years but also having formerly been on his staff, I would say your attack is not warranted. You are misinformed on some issues and basically calling him guilty by association. He preaches a very balanced gospel. There are certainly prosperity doctrines in the bible he uses, and to ignore these doctrines is to be as heretical as what you are accusing him of! He does NOT spend any time preaching unbiblical prosperity. And as far as the plane, you are unfortunately ignorant. His plane is a tool, expensive, and he himself would tell you that one better be sure God has called you to have one because of the expenes involved. I am one of over 500 ministers who are part of his network and his plane has helped him get to places and in times that commercial flights could never do. You have never heard the stories where he has flown, at his own expense, to help a hurting pastor and wife. Bottom line, we who love him and support him are paying for his plane and are glad to do so.

  3. Barclay don’t know the gospel! So how can you say he teaching a balanced gospel when Christ sacrificial life, death and resurrection aren’t preached? Have you heard his preaching and read his books? In his newest book he tells people to “ask Jesus” in their hearts to be saved. Ask Jesus in your heart theology isn’t found in Holy Scripture, but Scripture calls those to repent and ‘believe on Christ’ who is outside of themselves. Ask Jesus in your heart isn’t’ the same thing!

You are grossly misinformed on basic Christian doctrine, but yet you’re not ignorant on Barclay’s false teachings! Don’t come on here and tell me my attacks on his teachings aren’t warranted while Barclay can go preach at other churches condemning Protestants, saying they are damned, because he is afraid of the rise of biblical Calvinism.

On top of all that are Barclay’s false prophecies about Weapon’s of Mass Destruction and the increase of the American economy which things never historically happened. Does God lie? Barclay says that those things he sees and hears comes from Jesus himself.

Knowing the future is the test not only of a true prophet, it’s also of a true God! God is never wrong about the future or anything else. It’s because God is perfectly holy and good and he can’t do evil. He isn’t a man that he should lie. But Barclay clearly lied prophesying in the name of Jesus Christ.

Barclay and Joel Osteen are cut from the same cloth! So Barclay told you that he personally paid for the travel out of his own expense? Osteen does the same thing! He will give examples of his own righteousness. How puffed up! “Barclay talk” about himself with little or any biblical exegesis…he’s in the deep mire of the Prosperity Gospel and speaks of Kenneth Copland and others in the prosperity heresy as his own ministerial credentials.

And I quote, “Dr. Barclay hosts some of the Body of Christ’s greatest preachers and teachers……Among those who have ministered here are John Osteen, Lester Sumrall, Dr. Roy Hicks, Schambach, Kenneth Copeland, Phil Driscoll, Dr. George Evans, Charles Capps, and Jerry Savelle. ”

    Association and participation!
