Mark T. Barclay: Hatred for the Trinity and any Defense – False Impersonation by Ken Mattson

“Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?”  Is.29:15

Recently, Mark T. Barclay Ministries has set up a fake blogging website called Theology of Mark T. Barclay(Theologyofmarktbarclay). What’s astonishing about this is they rather blatantly copied this site name of The Theology of Mark T.Barclay(Thetheologyofmarktbarclay) and they’ve deliberately copied and stoled all my tags from my written post to use on their own post.

It also further appears that his ministry has unscrupulously gone as far as impersonating someone on their new blog – which is actually against the law. If you don’t know, false impersonation is both Federal and State crimes and should be the furthers activity from any Christian ministry saying they proclaim the gospel of Christ – especially a minister who has served as a Marine in the United States Military.

Their fake blog is about a guy by the name of Brother John and his new journey through the theology of Mark T. Barclay. Upon reading the articles though, it becomes very apparent that the entries weren’t written by someone unfamiliar with Barclay’s teachings – I think any lawyer could see that easily.  Again, we have thee legal proof of this and this is in the actual ownership of the site, because it’s Mark T. Barclay who owns and operates the blog and who is sponsoring and impersonating this Brother John.

Further, the public revelation that Mark T. Barclay would go this far in being morally unethical in this matter both in his church piety and the business practices of his ministry is truly astounding and is a further example of his falsehood and apostasy.

Barclay’s hatred for authentic Christianity: The Hiding of his heresies on the Trinity

As you can see, the legal name(s), which can be found publicly online is that of an ordained minister under Mark T. Barclay by the name of Pastor Chris McMichael and Engrafted Word in Church in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Further the public information states the registered admin or the person and organization who controls the site is Josh Barclay and Mark T. Barclay Ministries. So clearly the blog is part of Mark T. Barclay Ministries and not Brother John’s site.

I believe Mark T. Barclay Ministries copied my tags, my site name and that their site was maliciously set up with the intent to confuse people on search engines and this is because of Mark T. Barclay’s deep hatred for the Biblical doctrine of the Trinity and his deep hatred for the Christian churches defense of the truth of the Godhead over against his perverted heresies on the Trinity and the Person of Jesus Christ – which such Biblical defense – Mark T. Barclay has gone as far as falsely labeling defamation and slander.

Barclay has gone as far as falsely labeling defamation and slander.

Moreover, I think this fake site was also set up to give more credit to Barclay’s heretical teachings through false advertisement to those who are seeking the truth of the Trinity through the impersonation the Brother John.

There are probably other reasons why his ministry acted unethically, but then again public records don’t lie and it’s Mark T. Barclay Ministries who owns and controls the .com blog site and it’s not a Brother John.

The other reason I think is that Mark T. Barclay is trying his hardest, – even going to the unethical means of copying my site and going as far as using fictitious names and fabricated stories – is to hide the truth of his heresies on the Trinity and hide his false prophecies from his deep pocketed financial donors and the public. Whatever the case is, it isn’t right at all and it’s a very unethical activity for a minister and ministry to be involved in, because it’s criminal.

False Advertising to sell more Barclay products: The mis-painting of his image

What is the first public reaction when companies willfully engage in the practice of deception in order to mislead the public through false advertising? Well, first there is an public outcry, because people were stolen from through the deceptive greed of the company and parties involved; which usually leads to lawsuits with much damage to the companies, because of their illegal practices. Thus, false advertisement and the fruits of corporate greed have led to a lot of suffering and wrongful deaths in the United States.

In this case of Mark T. Barclay Ministries with the deliberately copying my site name, tags and impersonating or at best secretly sponsoring Brother John’s blog – giving him books and bibles to do reviews and not letting the public know that he is sponsored and his blog is paid for by Mark T. Barclay is very misleading and deceptive to the public at large and is at best false advertisement.

From the lowest estimate, it’s probably in the thousands of dollars Mark T. Barclay Ministries has paid for the site’s .com, hosting and that’s not including the books and bibles that they gave this ‘John’ and that’s not including the research time and writing that would have been needed to do just one post – companies that do these types of practices are usually caught eventually and taken to court for deceiving the public.

Thus, for Mark T. Barclay Ministries to go this far to prop up his name, and to give more credit to his false teachings on the Trinity – just to sell more products through the impersonation of a Brother John is absolutely shameful.

But then again, this is Mark T. Barclay’s track record and legacy as a heretic. Mark T. Barclay’s name is synonymous with major Trinitarian heresy and his legacy is that of a deceiver and a false prophet. So maybe we shouldn’t be that surprised that he would go as far as breaking the Seventh Commandment along with false advertising and false impersonation through the overt sponsoring of a John by his ministry, but indeed it’s very shameful.

Pervertedness, spiritual adultery and the online threats of physical harm to me

“Our God is a three-part being (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)”. Mark T. Barclay-The Missing Red Letters 2014

Eusebius

Eusebius

Mark T. Barclay has already gone as far as teaching a least three of the most perverted heresies on the Trinity and the Person of Jesus Christ recorded in history – which heresies are rooted in Gnosticism. In his new book called The Missing Red Letters, he continues this sickness and teaches gnostically that God is a three-part being.

So I guess for his ministry to go about and copy my blog and go about impersonating a Brother John with many dollars of church funds is probably nothing to them ethically or morally – I guess when someone like Mark T. Barclay commits the ultimate form of adultery and that is spiritual adultery, nothing else immorally is off limits to him.

Moreover, with the stories by former members of his church in the past that have written to this blog of spiritual abuse by himself and his ministers – I really don’t think anything is inconceivable now for Mark Barclay.

His hatred for the truth and his hatred for the truth of the Trinity and hatred of the defense of the Trinity has boiled over is absolutely astounding….… Its boiled over in this type of unethical practices of false impersonation by his ministry and the online threats toward me.

His hatred for the truth and his hatred for the truth of the Trinity and hatred of the defense of the Trinity has boiled over is absolutely astounding….… Its boiled over in this type of unethical practices of false impersonation by his ministry and the online threats toward me.

Just recently again, I was threatened physical harm by one of his followers over the Christian defense of the Trinity over against Barclay’s heresies on the Trinity. And another individual – most likely from Mark T. Barclay’s church – used all kinds of homosexually charged comments here on the blog and I traced the internet address back to Midland, Michigan – near Living Word Church, which is home to Mark T. Barclay Ministries.

Other Churches involved in FALSE IMPERSONATION and false advertising: The pen of Rev. McMichaels and Engrafted Word Church

Do you know your pastor is involved in false impersonation – hiding and the protection of Trinitarian heresies through false advertisement?

If you again look at the legal owners of the site on the public information you will also see that Mark T. Barclay Ministries didn’t act alone, but with another church and pastor.

Ironically, the Pastor Chris McMichael involved in this deceit is no other than an ordained minister under Mark T. Barclay and his church is called Engrafted Word Church.

From what I can see is that it looks like what little bible education he had was through Lester Sumrall’s Bible School, but the bulk of his education is secular and it’s in Geoscience. Further, it appears that he is not the owner of the site, but he works as an admin of the registered site. *Update 2016 below

If you go to this church or connected to this ministry; I would be asking questions why your pastor Chris McMichael and ministry is involved in this unscrupulous activity with the Barclay’s that is either criminal under U.S law or borders on the criminal.

Their site, which deliberately plagiarized my posted tags and my blog is obviously not Brother John’s site, because legally no John owns the blog. Moreover, the site is propped up and sponsored with hundreds if not thousands of dollars in monies given to Mark T. Barclay Ministries.

Again, it’s highly unlikely that there is a real Brother John in the first place and it seems this is a classic example of false Impersonation – if not at best false advertisement to sell more Mark T. Barclay materials or to prop up his name, but legally, pastor McMichael is legally involved in this deception and scandal.

Hosting aren’t cheap, including BARCLAY’S FAMILY BUSINESS hosted on the ministries servers: KMAS Racing

Just to let you know something if you don’t know – hosting and setting up a .com website. It ranges at the lowest in the hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year. Even for a person like myself – who is an occasional blogger; it would cost me a lot of money per year to make my blog site into a .com.

For me that’s a lot of Nespresso bullets that I could be buying for my espresso maker – so it’s not worth it. And to think a ‘Brother Jon’ would want to buy a .com – just to write about his experiences this year at a Living Word Conference and praise Barclay’s heresies – is an unthinkable amount of money for the average person to pay, when regular blogging, twitter and Facebook are free….

Further the astonishing thing is that the public records also appears that Mark T. Barclay Ministries has started a profit business called KMAS Racing, which is hosted and owned by Mark T. Barclay Ministries and most likely owned by a Barclay family member.

Further the astonishing thing is that the public records also appears that Mark T. Barclay Ministries has started a profit business called KMAS Racing, which is hosted and owned by Mark T. Barclay Ministries and most likely owned by a Barclay family member(Josh).

The site also has a forum, which is up to date on hobby radio controlled cars and dune buggies. The business called KMAS Racing also sells merchandise unrelated to ministry.

If I was a giver to Mark T. Barclay Ministries, I’d be asking how much of your none profit money has been spent on the business from the church funds – because this is a legal matter and legally by law they have to be transparent without question.

Again, remember having a webpage and hosting is not cheap and not to included is the expensive cost of webpage, forum design and updates. It takes expertise to design, setup up webpages and host a forum. These specialized services alone are thousands of dollars a year and further, the profit business site is owned by Mark T. Barclay Ministries – not cheap stuff!

I don’t know the laws in this area, but it does seem like a violation of a churches nonprofit status – having a profit business and using church giving funds to pay for the server use of the hosting of KMAS Racing.

Again, I don’t know, but it sure doesn’t look right and if I was the one giving to Mark T. Barclay Ministries, I would ask how much donations are being used to keep the business hosted and up to date and why donated monies are going toward the business of selling hobby related racing products – legally it really doesn’t look like it sits right with the IRS.

*Update September 2016: It appears that they have taken the business page down, but still own the site.

Mark Barclay’s DEEP HATRED FOR THE TRINITY and anyone who defense this most precious Christian doctrine

This is the sad state of Living Word Church cult and Mark T. Barclay himself and his hatred for the most precious doctrine in Scripture – being God himself – the Trinity.

Their actions towards me and this site only paint the picture more vividly of a evil man, a so called patriot(who hates the personal Godhead) and a ministry who will do anything to stop the historical and Scriptural defense of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity – even at the costly expense of false impersonation and false advertisement.

The actions of Mark T. Barclay ministries only reveals a deep seated hatred of the truth of the Trinity – who is God alone in three divine persons(and not parts as Barclay heretically teaches), being simultaneously three in one; and further they will stop at nothing to prevent those as myself who would defend this Rule of Faith.

It’s absolutely mind boggling that they would go this far, but facts are facts and truth is truth and it’s his ministry who has done this unethical thing in setting up a fake blog with donated monies. This is sadly the reality of Mark T. Barclay and his followers – like other cults who hate the Trinity, and hate any defense of the Biblical Doctrine of the Trinity.

The truth is that Mark T. Barclay, his ministry and his associated ministers ordained under him have publicly attacked and persecuted any defense of the Trinity and the proper and Biblical understanding of Jesus Christ being one person with two natures, being truly man and truly God.

If you go to Mark T. Barclay church or a follower or Rev. Chris McMichael’s church you should be asking questions about doctrinal integrity on the Trinity, financial ones and about being involved in false impersonation –  using dot.coms and church monies.

Mark T. Barclay: Mental illness, Reality and the Trinity by Ken Mattson

“The largest subgroup to experience this problem is the combat veteran. In the United States, the Vietnam War has produced the largest percentage of PTSD cases. In fact, it was after studies of Vietnam veterans were added to studies of civilian post-trauma sufferers that the American Psychiatric Association created, in 1980, the diagnostic category: post-traumatic stress disorder (acute, chronic, and/or delayed).” Anxieties.com

“The incidence of OCD in service personnel is uncertain. Most of the information comes from US studies which have typically looked at Vietnam veterans. Lifetime prevalence rates among Vietnam veterans range from 0.5% – 5.5% depending on severity of “war zone stress”. Veterans info

So does Mark T. Barclay as a Vietnam vet have some sort of mental illness? After years of writing on this theological blog, I recently started wondering if that might be the case.

If you listened to Barclay’s preaching and the testimonies of his associate ministers. They will begin to talk about how clean his vehicles are and preach of their strange but rather spiritual experiences when going into Mark T. Barclay’s bedroom and seeing his neat sock drawer. One of them went even as far as preaching after this bazaar event that his sock drawer experience that day was bible college.

To me and those who are reading this bazaar testimony. To even classify seeing someone’s tidy sock drawer and relating it to education in bible college is absolutely weirdo stuff! For certain, I can say that wasn’t bible college, the same as I can say that Mormon underwear aren’t holy. It’s just weirded out stuff! Almost relatable to seeing others in Mark Barclay’s congregation with identically oiled back hair like him.

So is this excessive cleaning behavior of Mark T. Barclay’s normal or a characteristic of holiness?

By all accounts it’s not normal and no, and it’s not even close to being biblical holiness nor righteousness. Any righteousness the believer has is always a direct result by Jesus Christ’s wonderful and saving work by grace and through faith alone by his imputed righteousness to the believing sinner. Being united with Christ’s vicarious death and resurrection, the sinners old nature is forever severed. Thus, the new believer desires righteousness and holiness and not excessive cleaning of outward material things like Mark T. Barclay and the pharisees.

From what I remember of the testimonies of Barclay’s bedroom in that sermon. There were no study books laying around or research papers for messages. But what was clearly evident from the testimony was that Mark T. Barclay spent hours and many hours on tidying his socks and meticulously coordinating them and placing them in his drawer.

To be frank, this type of behavior is clearly not normal, because normal people don’t behave strangely like this and certainly not ministers. It’s certainly not a characteristic of a man of God. But this compulsion sounds like a ‘mark’ of a mental disorder like OCD and one that might be caused from the Vietnam War.

“Compulsions are repetitive acts which an individual may perform incessantly in a rigid and stereotypical manner. They are often related to a particular obsession. For example, an individual with an obsessional fear of contamination may clean compulsively. Classically, compulsive rituals are performed to reduce anxiety or tension associated with the obsession.” Veterans info

The U.K Military, based on U.S medical research report goes on further and describes common compulsions as OCD.

“Common compulsions include: Cleaning. This may involve excessive hand washing or cleaning of surfaces, cutlery, crockery, etc. Counting. The person frequently counts to specific numbers, often in order to prevent some unspecified catastrophe.” Veterans info

Recently, one of the elders at Amazing Grace Church gave a testimony how Mark Barclay helped their churdog tagch after a leadership change, and from her own words, he sat them down as a marine. This was her actual wording of the event, a MARINE! That’s quite frightening, because Barclay wasn’t a soldier at the time. The war had been over for a few decades then and he was still functioning from their testimony like that of a jarhead.

So what do you think about this? Do you think it’s strange that Mark Barclay still acts like a soldier and calls himself a General? From Barclay’s bazaar sock drawer testimonies one can see that something isn’t healthy. Further, if you follow Barclay and are under him as a minister, do you think he is right in being obsessed with counting your tithe?

As you can see from the military reports and from Mark T. Barclay’s associated ministers testimonies that something isn’t right. The list goes on further like making sure the truck gas tank is always full and making sure it’s meticulously cleaned. And running his elder meeting like a cult with 2am meetings, which cause sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is a well documented tool of cults, because it’s an effective way of indoctrination.

Part two coming soon.

Next time, I want to write on reality and what is real. Reality is that the Christian church has condemned Mark T. Barclay as a heretic for teaching at least three of the most destructive Trinitarian heresies known to the Christian church. Barclay like other heretics and cults says this is not reality, but in Barclay’s words any defense of the Orthodox teaching on the Trinity is slander against him.

So, has Mark T. Barclay lost touch with reality? American democracy is a historical reality. Its development is well documented and so is the doctrine of the Trinity. The Christian church has the authority of Scripture against Barclay and other heretics like the Gnostics. That same authority of holy Scripture never once teaches that God is a three-part being as Barclay heretically teaches. It’s the history of the very words of the Church father’s who condemn Mark Barclay word for word through the Orthodox statements on the Trinity and the Person of Christ….this is not only reality, but it’s a well documented historical reality.

This is just a side note, but I’ve been through the whole country of Vietnam and I’ve seen for myself the country and the ongoing affects of the war and it’s still not a pretty sight. I’ve recently talk to a guy in his 20’s from the country and he told me that it was his generation that suffered the most. After hearing more of what he said, I had to hold back my tears after hearing that, because I was in a public place.

Mark T. Barclay and Modalism: The Man outside Ecclesia by Ken Mattson

man-with-l-for-loser_1Those that permit the Holy Spirit to be their Father. Those who will allow the Holy Spirit, remember he’s not a third Person, he is God made up of three parts just like…my son Josh and his soul is not some body else and his spirit is not someone else, and so I got to decipher…….Now there’s not three people, it’s just one Josh three parts. There’s not three Gods, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, he’s just one. He’s just got three parts. So this great Holy Spirit wants to father you.”Jesus, the Command Giver – Mark T. Barclay

In one of my last posts I wrote, “one of the striking realities in both Barclay’s books, teachings and worship services is the lack of Trinitarianism and it’s easy to see why with such devastatingly definitions as we see above. In one single swoop Barclay dismantles biblical orthodoxy and the chain reaction to other biblical doctrines is cataclysmic.” [1]

After writing that I started wondering how cataclysmic this heresy was in the life of Mark T. Barclay’s church, because as we seen in other post the guy does not understand basic Christianity. So in this post I will look at the destructiveness of Barclay’s denial of the Christian orthodox teaching of the Trinity and how it affects worship in his services, but first I want to take a little time an talk about worship.

Christianity is a true religion and a revealed faith or in other words it is a religion of revelation. Our knowledge of God does not come through anything human made, but it comes because God reveals himself. The bible is a book of revelation and we see God’s self-revelation in the Trinitarian economy of Salvation.

The doctrine of the Trinity states that God is one, yet in some mysterious sense also three: Father, Son and Holy Spirit and the work of redemption is one in which all three act together, the Father purposing it, the Son securing it and the Spirit applying it.[2] Thus, against all heresies the Church has stated the Divine Trinity is the full revelation of God.

So what is the practical outworking of the doctrine of the Trinity? 1. That Christian worship first must be governed by God’s revelation of Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 2. True worship is grounded in that truth God is Triune and that true worship must be centered in the Trinity. This means that in a worship service, the contents of the service must be Trinitarian.

What I mean by the contents of the service is what is called liturgy. No church is without liturgy, even churches who say they have no liturgy do have liturgy and usually it is a bad liturgy born out of practices done over time. This is why the Church through out history has endeavored to be faithful to Trinitarian worship in its liturgy by singing the Doxology[3] which is a Trinitarian hymn and reciting the Apostle’s and the Nicene creeds which are Trinitarian confessions.[4]

The outworking of Trinitarian worship is accomplished by the liturgical practice of the administration of the Word and Sacraments or what are know as ‘means of grace’ in Protestantism. The Church is most truly the Church as it celebrates both Baptism and Holy Communion which is the Eucharist.[5] Thus, worship takes its sharpest focus in the Eucharistic celebration.

The Eucharist does this precisely, because when receiving the Church participates in the life of the Trinity. Believers are spiritually nourished feeding upon Christ crucified and all the benefits of his death are received by faith. The Second Person of the Trinity is truly spiritually present via God the Holy Spirit by faith to the believer in the Eucharist celebration. Moreover, the benefits of Christ’s redeeming work on the cross are given by the gracious work of the Spirit and received by faith alone. [6]

So how does this contrast with Barclay’s heretical teachings on the Divine Trinity? The contrast is so drastic that it brings devastation to biblical worship on a seismic scale. The flood of false teaching that sweeps through Barclay’s services as in his books can only be likened to the raging waves of a tsunami, pillaging Trinitarian worship wherever it goes.

Barclay’s entire liturgical focus in his service is the tithe and multiple offerings. His services do not culminate in the celebration of Christ’s life, vicarious death and resurrection celebrated in the Holy Eucharist. Worship though, culminates in heretical practices born out of the Prosperity Gospel on sowing and reaping of money, which takes center stage in Mark T. Barclay’s services.

The true New Testament Church is not a tithing Church, but it is a Eucharistic Church, worshiping one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity. When Barclay teaches on the Trinity it is heresy by describing the Godhead as parts and not Persons and teaching their eternal names were changed.[7] His teachings on the Trinity are akin to Modalism and this has devastating repercussions both to the whole of Christian doctrine and to the life of the Church as we have seen above. This is because doctrine should never be seen as an abstraction to Christian life.

In the life of the Trinity, relational terms given in the bible are not accidental, but they are permanent features in the life of God. The Son is always the Son and the Father is always the Father and same with the Spirit. Simply put, the Triune Jehovah is eternal and as we are taught in scripture does not change. “Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is from eternity……..and everything to the contrary must be rejected as heretical.” Thomas Aquinas

Mark T. Barclay states that he is considered a leader among other leaders and even in one publication calls himself a global leader, which should be considered frightening. I think that the Antichrist will do the same thing, because he also will be a liar. When Barclay falsely teaches on the Trinity it is heresy and it is not by the Spirit of God, but it is by the spirit of error. Scripture is super clear where all false teaching comes from and Barclay like other heretics stands outside the Church.[8]

Lastly, I want to end with the Pentecostal view of the Eucharist, because I can most likely guess that Barclay is not teaching this, given that he has not studied Christian history.

I’ve always chuckled when I read about Pentecostal history and Barclay’s shaming discourse against Calvinism at Richard Jolliff’s church. I have ‘chuck’old, because it is like a satire. [9] Here the ‘theologian’ condemns Calvinism, yet John Calvin’s fingerprint can be seen in key doctrines in Pentecostalism, such as Ecclesiology, Sanctification and especially the Lord’s Supper. He not only condemns Calvinism by lies, but he also inadvertently speaks against his own tradition being a Pentecostal/charismatic.

P.S. Mark, the next time you salute, please make your hand into an ‘L’ shape on your forehead.

Pentecostal teaching of on the Eucharist

The book Foundations of Pentecostal Theology

The elements, when received by faith, mediate to the believer the spiritual benefits of Christ’s Death, held by Calvin and the majority of the reformers. The elements in themselves are only tokens, but when received by faith, real communion with the Lord is experienced and the benefits of that communion may be mediated. This seems to be the more scriptural view.” (See 1 Cor. 10:16; 11:27, 28, 29.) “Foundations of Pentecostal Theology” written by Foursquare stalwarts Nathaniel Van Cleave and Guy Duffield

The book Pentecostal Sacraments, 2010

A Pentecostal theology implies that the Spirit moves upon the sacramental elements which become a “means of grace” in the context of the worshipping church as a Trinitarian fellowship.”

Sacraments are charismatic by nature. Sacraments are spiritual graces and those who participate in faith encounter the “real presence” of Christ through the Holy Spirit.”

Wesley held to a Pneumatic view of the ‘real presence’ in Holy Communion, similar to John Calvin.”

There was a Creator, he was later called Jehovah, there was his word, later on when he come here. God said you call this baby, not the Word, but Jesus which really means Yahshua…. which really means the savior….So this Word in heaven he was the Word and then of course the bible talks about the Spirit of God there hovering over the creation of God. So there was the Creator he spoke through the power of his word……now these aren’t three different people. We teach them sorta, kinda almost as three different people for the sake of teaching. Now that Creator, Word and Spirit for the sake of man understanding and relating was changed by God, you can read it in the Scriptures, I know you know this, forgive me this so elementary. But it was changed to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father, the Creator, the Son of God really the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us….and then the Spirit, the great Holy Spirit……So you are three parts right after the image of God.” Mark T. 8. 1 John 4:1-6, also look at the warning to false teachers like Barclay. Notice it says falsehood. If there is any sin that is the king of falsehood it is heresy, because it’s the twisting of eternal truth. Rev 22:11 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

“In the Trinity, there are three distinct Persons in one being, and each one is fully God.  Yet there is only one God, not three Gods (that would be tri-theism, which is polytheism). The problem with the son/husband/father analogy is that you have only one person—a man. He’s one man playing three different roles. This isn’t the Trinity.  It’s an ancient heresy called modalism, which teaches that God simply exists in three different “modes.” That isn’t the orthodox, historic teaching of the church.” Christianity 101, Fred Sanders

“Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic [universal] faith; Which faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the persons nor dividing the substance. For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit…..So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God;  And yet they are not three Gods, but one God.” 5th-century Athanasian Creed

…taught that Father, Son and Holy Spirit together are components of the one God. This led them to believe that each of the persons of the Trinity is only part God, only becoming fully God when they come together. http://www.monergism.com/Trinitarian%20Heresies.html

9. Barclay distorted Biblical Calvinism by calling it ‘once saved always saved’ and referred to Calvinism as damnable doctrines. Further, under Barclay’s leadership, Jolliff’s church has stated that the false teacher Pelagius was a saint. But this is in contrast to what the Church has stated that indeed Pelagius and his teachings(pelagianism and semi-pelagianism) were and are heresy and condemn Pelagius as a heretic. SEE Roger E. Olson, Arminian Theology: Myths and Realities (Downers Grove: IVP Academic, 2006, Page, 30.) Olson continues: “Today, semi-Pelagianism is the default theology of most American evangelical Christians. This is revealed in the popularity of clichés such as `If you’ll take one step toward God, he’ll come the rest of the way toward you,’ and `God votes for you, Satan votes against you, and you get the deciding vote,’ coupled with the almost total neglect of human depravity and helplessness in spiritual matters. Arminianism is almost totally unknown, let alone believed, in popular evangelical Christianity.”  Arminian scholar Roger Olson on Spiritual Abuse, “Pentecostalism, fundamentalism and the charismatic movement as those segments. What I am saying is not that these are bad movements; I am saying they tend to be breeding grounds where toxic faith and spiritual abuse can grow. Too often the leaders do not address the problem because the underlying ethos is authoritarian and the people engaging in spiritual abuse are powerful and influential……But most often, in my experience, there’s nothing anyone can really do (except run) because the spiritual abusers are autonomous; there is no one over them to hold them accountable. They are religious entrepreneurs who have a solid grip on their churches and organizations. In many cases they own them outright or have set them up so that nobody can challenge their leadership.”

Mark T. Barclay and Modalism by Ken Mattson

In heaven Jesus was not known as Jesus, he was known as the Word. In Genesis Chapter. 1, it defines the Trinity of God, the three parts of God. You are made by the way after his image, three parts. There was a Creator, he was later called Jehovah. There was his word, later on when he come here God said you call this baby, not the Word, but Jesus which really means Yahshua….and then of course the bible talks about the Spirit of God……now these aren’t three different people. We teach them sorta, kinda almost as three different people for the sake of teaching. Now that Creator, Word and Spirit for the sake of man understanding and relating was changed by God, you can read it in the Scriptures, I know you know this, forgive me this so elementary. But it was changed to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Mark T. Barclay, Jesus the command giver. [1]

So what do we learn from Mark T. Barclay’s teaching on the Trinity? 1. That God is three parts. 2. God is not persons. ‘People language’ is only used for the sake of teaching, 3. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not their eternal identity. 4. It’s drastically different from the biblical orthodox doctrine of the Trinity. 5. Barclay is not a theologian nor a biblical scholar as he claims.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is from eternity……..and everything to the contrary must be rejected as heretical.” Thomas Aquinas [2]

About the only thing that Barclay gets right in this definition is the name ‘Trinity’, but his definition is heresy, because it’s not the truth found in Scripture. As we will see below this is warped and touches on the heresy of Modalism, which denies the ontologically distinct persons of the Holy Trinity. So for Barclay to teach that the persons of the Godhead are merely parts instead of persons is serious and heretical and stands outside Christian orthodoxy. [3]

One of the striking realities in both Barclay’s books, teachings and worship services is the lack of Trinitarianism and it’s easy to see why with such devastatingly definitions as we see above. In one single swoop Barclay dismantles biblical orthodoxy and the chain reaction to other biblical doctrines is cataclysmic.

I say cataclysmic, because in Barclay’s preaching and teaching we don’t find a clear understanding of the orthodox teaching of justification by faith, nor sanctification which both are by the substitutionary atonement of Christ. Those teachings which are central to the gospel are just not found and it’s caused from this chain reaction of not understanding the Trinity. In other words, the domino effect is detrimental not only to other doctrines but to the gospel itself. The gospel is Trinitarian in shape, because salvation proceeds from the Holy Trinity.

The Trinity is the foundation of the Christian faith, but the church has also stated that it’s a mystery. God is love, because he is Trinity. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not nicknames but is the proper name for the God of the bible. They weren’t changed to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as Barclay falsely teaches, but they are eternal. The Father uncreated and eternal, the Son uncreated and eternal, the Spirit uncreated and eternal. Their biblical names correspond to who they are and their relations to one another first and then to creation. [4]

Neither do we confound the persons nor divide the substance. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Father, nor is the Spirit the Son or the Father. They are eternally united and distinct persons, the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God, but there are not three Gods, but one God. [5]

“We understand equality to be in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, inasmuch as no one of them either precedes in eternity, or excels in greatness, or surpasses in power.” Saint Augustine [6]

So what is the biblical definition of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity?

The doctrine of the Trinity is there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct persons, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In other words, God is one in essence and three in person. These definitions express three important truths: 1. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct persons, 2. Each person is fully God, 3. There is only one God.

This is what the Church has believed and it has reflected this in its historical writings and creeds for the last 20 centuries. Early church fathers saw these threats similar to Dr. Mark T. Barclay’s definition as heresy and ultimately threats to the Gospel itself. The Godhead is indeed real persons and the early church fathers in the face of attacks such as Arianism and Modalism labored on the truth that God is simultaneously one and three. Not three manifestations nor creatures, or parts, but God is three distinct persons, yet one in essence or substance, “tres Personae, una Substantia.” Church Father Tertillian 160-225 AD[7]

There is but one living and true God, everlasting, without body, parts, or passions; of infinite power, wisdom, and goodness; the Maker, and Preserver of all things both visible and invisible. And in unity of this Godhead there be three Persons, of one substance, power, and eternity; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.  Thirty-nine Articles

Barclay also has his Christology wrong and is this from his refusal to acknowledge the Eternal distinct persons of the Trinity being Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Son is the eternal only begotten Word(Logos)of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the only begotten Son of the Father, the Second person in the divine Trinity.

Moreover, though the Lord Jesus Christ was the pre-incarnate Word his name wasn’t changed to ‘Son’ as Barclay teaches. On top of that Barclay shouldn’t be so quick to correct even the apostle Paul who when writing of the preexistence of the Son referred to him as Christ Jesus. Christ didn’t become the Son at his incarnation, but was already in existence as the Son, a person present with God the Father from all eternity.

Jesus Christ, then is the eternal Son of God, the second person of the Trinity. He is God the Son first for Trinitarian reasons and when he became incarnate he became the son of Mary, the promised son of David, the Messiah.

Without the Trinity there is no salvation, because salvation proceeds from the persons of the Trinity. The father so loved the world he gave his only begotten Son and whoever believes in Him shall be saved. This salvation, the eternal redemptive work of Christ is then applied to the believer by the ministry of the third person, the Holy Spirit.[8]

The more we explore and understand the depths of God’s commitment to salvation, the more we have to come to grips with the triunity of the one God. The deeper we dig into the gospel, the deeper we go into the mystery of the Trinity.” Fred Sanders [9]

It’s no wonder why Barclay gets Christian history like Calvinism wrong like he preached at Amazing Grace Church in Wheeler, Michigan, it’s because he doesn’t understand basic doctrine. He has proven it time and time again. Church history and bible doctrine go hand in hand and Mark’s heretical definition on the Trinity found above clearly stands outside biblical orthodoxy.

Moreover, Dr. Mark T. Barclay cannot call himself evangelical without an orthodox understanding and teaching of the divine persons of the Trinity. No matter what’s on paper or a statement of beliefs, what really matters is what he is teaching. In Mark T. Barclay’s ministry statement of beliefs it states that God is Triune, but when worked out theologically by himself it is not only deficient but doctrinally outside biblical orthodoxy, because his definition is heretical.

This isn’t something new though, because many Word-faith ministers do exactly the same who are part of the Prosperity Gospel. They appear to teach biblical orthodoxy with a statement of beliefs posted on their website, but in reality they vomit falsity. For example Kenneth Copland has teachings concerning the Godhead which resemble that of Mormonism.

It’s easy to see the doctrinal destructiveness of Mark T. Barclay’s heretical teaching on the Holy Trinity. From the eternal persons of the Trinity, to the Person of Christ which is Christology, to the redemptive work of Christ, his substitutionary atonement and doctrines like justification, sanctification of the believer are all corrupted by the domino effect from an warped doctrine of the Trinity. Without the Trinity one has a different gospel and a different god and not the Triune God of the bible.

Barclay’s definition is heresy because its not the truth and like his false prophecies is a fabrication of lies.

What need would there be of the gospel, which is the substance of the New Covenant, laying down (as it does) that the Law and the Prophets lasted until John the Baptist, if thenceforward the Father, the Son, and the Spirit are not both believed in as Three, and as making One Only God? God was pleased to renew His covenant with man in such a way as that His Unity might be believed in, after a new manner, through the Son and the Spirit, in order that God might now be known openly, in His proper Names and Persons, who in ancient times was not plainly understood, though declared through the Son and the Spirit. Away, then, with those “Antichrists who deny the Father and the Son.”Church Father, Tertullian, Against Praxeas written before 208A.D.[10]

Mark T. Barclay’s denial of the real persons of the Godhead and his insistence that they are parts is akin and a form of Modalism.

Modalism is probably the most common theological error concerning the nature of God.  It is a denial of the Trinity. Modalism states that God is a single person who, throughout biblical history, has revealed Himself in three modes, or forms. http://carm.org/modalism

The church rejected modelism as a heresy. It is clearly unbiblical, for the three persons enter transaction with one another. Jesus prays to the Father(John 17); the Father speaks from heaven while Jesus is on earth(Matt 3:17). The Father and the Son together send the Spirit into the world(John 14:16), and the spirit bears witness to Jesus.” John M. Frame, Salvation belongs to the Lord.

4. “Overall, the relations of the three are summarized in the concept of love, which involves a dynamic of both giving and receiving. The persons are what they are by virtue of what they give and receive from each other.
